  1. Historically miners would carry canaries down into mine tunnels. If dangerous gases were present, the gases would kill the canary before affecting the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately.
  2. As your stress builds, you will have an early indicator - a canary of sorts. These can range from an urge to reorganize your workspace to spending time looking for the perfect vacation home or cutting your hair.
  3. Consider what your "canary in the coal mine" might be, to know the early-warning signal that tells you when your stress levels are approaching the danger zone.
