“We are all connected. What unites us is our common humanity. I don't want to oversimplify things - but the suffering of a mother who has lost her child is not dependent on her nationality, ethnicity or religion. White, black, rich, poor, Christian, Muslim or Jew - pain is pain - joy is joy.” - Desmond Tutu (Human rights activist, 1931-2021)
Why it Works
Self-compassion – When you practice focusing on common humanity, it can remind you that feelings of inadequacy, disappointment or sadness are universal. It also connects you, on a human level, with people you don't appear to have much in common with. The emotion of compassion springs from the recognition that the human experience is imperfect, that we are all fallible.
